Dr. Belshe is an expert in childhood and adult vaccine research, and has spent thirty years in the infectious diseases field. He is Professor of Infectious Diseases, St. Louis University School of Medicine and Director of the St. Louis University Center for Vaccine Development, where he heads the NIAID-funded Vaccine Treatment and Evaluation Unit (VTEU), which conducts clinical research on new vaccines and biologics. His experience through five NIH funding cycles has included the evaluation of vaccines in infants, children, adults and the elderly. More than 10,000 volunteers have participated in these studies. Dr. Belshe was a leader in the successful development of FluMist®, and has been involved in developing new vaccines for childhood meningitis, pertussis, hepatitis A, and other diseases. He is currently involved in avian flu vaccine studies for children. He has co-authored more than 150 research articles on influenza, HIV, smallpox, RSV, and pertussis, which have appeared in distinguished journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association. Dr. Belshe earned his BS in Chemistry at the College of William and Mary and received his MD at the University of Illinois School of Medicine. He trained in infectious diseases at the Laboratory of Infectious Diseases at the NIH. Dr. Belshe is a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the American Academy of Microbiology, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. |
